LoVe vs. VD kissage (Updated) |
Lead | |
|
how many times did we see Duncan and Veronica kiss? I know, I know -- I blocked 'em out, but am I wrong in thinking that we actually saw Logan and Veronica kiss near the same amount, as much or more? Which, if the case, is pretty impressive considering that they only dated a few episodes and one episode worth of flashbacks, whereas VD had a whole season of flashbacks and dated for 11 episodes. I could be totally wrong and just blocked it out though.

If you go by how many scenes there were that involved kissing, VD will win but if you count each individual kiss within those scenes (including pecks) I'm not sure. I think that Veronica and Logan used to hover kiss a lot, they'd pull away and then keep coming back for more after putting a halt to things, kissing on cheeks, foreheads, lips, necks etc. Those kinds of little things are what made me think that LoVe had more chemistry. In their scenes it was like they couldn't stop touching each other.
I really believe the lack of passionate chemistry between VD was intentional this season. RT wanted them to be sweet, not hot. When Veronica ran to Duncan in Donut Run and kissed him I expected one of those big, desperate last kisses but instead it was this pathetic soft, short kiss. I don't even like VD and I found it anticlimatic. VD is very soft. What makes me think it was deliberately made soft rather than consuming is that I remember when Veronica dreamed of a heavy make out session with Duncan in the first season. They were desperately clinging to each other in the car, there was some chemistry between them (not the same amount as in LoVe but it was present) and yet when they finally got together we never got anything like that. L/V kissed much more heatedly because I think RT wanted us to feel that what they had was more intense, passionate and as a consequence more thoughtlessly lustful. If Veronica was swept by her hormones while she was with Logan it would make more sense how she could get so confused about whether Logan was a bad guy or not. They didn't really talk to each other because they were too busy kissing, they didn't have trust. I think it bodes well for LoVe that VD didn't have that kind of reckless chemistry. Veronica felt safe in the relationship with Duncan (even though she had so many reasons not to). THat to me indicates she feels out of control with Logan. Someone like Veronica would not enjoy feeling out of control especially when she isn't sure she can trust the person that makes her feel that way. Getting a handle on those feelings, learning to trust Logan (and Logan earning the right of her trust) I think will have to be resolved before they get back together. The kissing thing is a good catch Jennifer, and interesting. I think it would be a good idea to go through the episodes and tally up the kisses (and how passionate the kisses were) in some kind of analysis. I really think we were meant to infer that their passion was reckless, especially because so many of the season one kisses involved twirling of some kind (WoCD - spinning camera angles; MAD twirling in front of the mirror, twirling into Logan's house, and Logan twirling Veronica as they walk to the pool house). The VD kisses usually happened without much movement. ** ETA I had some time on my hands with this laryngitis so I skim-watched all the episodes for every single kiss exchanged between Veronica/Duncan and Veronica/Logan and I was so surprised by the results. You were right Jennifer, she has kissed Logan more times on screen than she kissed Duncan. That's such great news because it means the writers were completely aware that the kissing chemistry between Logan/Veronica was much more powerful/entertaining. Before you doubt my bias I counted the kisses of both couples in the same way - if their lips broke (as in they moved apart to talk/smile/knit a sweater) I counted the next time they kissed as separate; if they did not part but changed the direction of the kiss I counted it as ONE long kiss. Even more strange we saw no VD kisses after episode 207 until the goodbye kisses in 211. Man . . . . that relationship sure was steamy. *I wish I had a sarcasm light in pink neon floating above my head* If you don't believe me, here's the tally: LoVe KISSES: 57 VD KISSES: 34 That VD tally includes the dream/hallucination kisses in 103 which is almost cheating but hey, they still lost. More detailed (sorry in advanced for listing so many VD moments): VD KISSES (34) Lips: Twenty-Two Hand/Neck/Cheek/Forehead: Twelve Flashback kiss in the hallways (Pilot) Duncan and Veronica makeout in the backseat of his car in one of her dreams (Meet John Smith) / Veronica and Duncan making out with Duncans car in one of his drug withdrawal hallucinations (Meet John Smith) Drink if youre a virgin kiss between Duncan and Veronica on the beach (The Wrath of Con) Duncan kisses Veronicas hand in a flashback (Return of the Kane) Veronica pecks Duncan on the cheek at the same time Logan pecks Lilly on the cheek in a flashback (Lord of the Bling). (Nobody Puts Baby in a Corner) Veronica walks quickly and kisses Duncan briefly on the lips in the apartment where shes hiding him, she tells him its time to go and they can never see each other again. (Donut Run) Duncan tells Veronica he loves her and always will, she replies you better and they kiss. (Donut Run) LoVe KISSES (57) Lips: Thirty-Three Forehead/Cheek/Neck/Shoulder: Twenty-Four Veronica runs up and kisses Logan on the cheek, pretending to be his fianc (Rushkie Business) Veronica kisses Logan at the Camelot (Weapons of Class Destruction) Logan swings Veronica around and kisses her a lot more at the Camelot (Weapons of Class Destruction) Logan kisses Veronica at the front of his house after telling her he doesnt feel guilty about moving on any more (Hot Dogs). They then kiss each other simultaneously after saying they have no idea what it is theyre doing. (Hot Dogs) Veronica and Logan make out in the bathroom, from spinning kiss to his kiss on her neck never breaking apart. (M.A.D.) Its so wrong its right simultaneous kiss. (M.A.D.) Logan kisses Veronica on the side of her cheek as she sits on the sink. (M.A.D.) Four peck-dialogue kisses against the door in the bathroom (M.A.D.) Logan kisses Veronica on the cheek before exiting the bathroom (M.A.D.) Spinning kiss into the Echolls mansion followed by another kiss when they get inside. (M.A.D.) Logan kisses Veronicas forehead then brushes her hair aside in the Echolls house (M.A.D.) Logan kisses Veronicas cheek after stroking her hair aside at his house (M.A.D.) Small spinning peck as he starts to back her toward the couch in M.A.D. Three short kisses walking backwards and stopping in front of the couch in M.A.D. Logan kisses her on the cheek before they sit down on the couch facing each other in M.A.D. Secrets are kinda hot too kiss with Logan ending up on top of Veronica. (M.A.D.) Logan kisses Veronica in the darkness outside the door to his house, he backs through it still kissing her when the lights suddenly come on (A Trip to the Dentist) Logan says why cant we just be like this? in the poolhouse and kisses her on the edge of her mouth, why does their have to be other people in this world? peck on the other side of her mouth. He sits on the bed, she straddles him and he takes off her jacket as he kisses her mouth (A Trip to the Dentist) He lies down she slides on top of him and kisses him four times but well count that as one. (A Trip to the Dentist) She kisses both his cheeks as he tries to dodge away from her so they can talk (A Trip to the Dentist) After he tells her he wants to protect her Veronica reaches down and kisses him deeply (A Trip to the Dentist) They pull apart and she tells him she trusts him, reaches down and kisses him again (A Trip to the Dentist) He gives her another peck on the lips before rolling away to get a drink. (A Trip to the Dentist) Logan kisses Veronicas face five times from one cheek across her lips to the other before leaving the poolhouse (A Trip to the Dentist) Logan kisses Veronica on the forehead after she tells him I need to do whatever (Leave it to Beaver) Logan kisses Veronica when he comes to see her at work, still looking beat up. (Normal is the Watchword) Veronica and Logan make out in his Xterra (Normal is the Watchword) Logan tells her he loves her, Veronica brushes the comment aside but pulls logan down on top of her in a deeper series of kisses right before the XTerra is shot at (Normal is the Watchword) ETA2 Veronica and Logan are engaged in an extremely intense makeout session in the backseat of his Xterra. They're pretty much trying to swallow each other so I don't know how to break up the scene into single kisses. I think it goes mouth kiss (1), Logan kisses her neck(2), Veronica drags him back up to kiss his mouth again (3), he lowers her slightly towards the seat and kisses her neck again (4), she spins them around until she's on top and kisses his mouth again (5) (that's right V, take charge). A brief interruption as Veronica cuts into the flashback. Then we're back in the car again, Veronica is straddling Logan in a deep kiss (6) when Lucky - that bastard - knocks on the window and breaks them apart. Dammmmmn . . . Then during the conversation Logan leans forward and nuzzle/kisses Veronica's shoulder. So cute. I decided to include that little peck as well because I love it so (7) (I Am God) [ETA3] "Aww, sweetie, I love you but you must be the most gullible girl I've ever met." And a sweet peck on the lips during Veronica's dream of a Lilly lives graduation. (Not Pictured) Yeah, they need to talk but Logan needs to kiss her damn it! He throws down her luggage and swoops in for a firm (but lamentably brief) kiss on the lips. Veronica throws her arms around him as they spin and the momentum breaks them apart. He pecks her lips again as they giggle and he eventually leans her against the wall much like M.A.D. (2) (Not Pictured) Veronica tells Logan everything will be fine, she can feel it as he kisses her neck/cheek three times, almost purring with that 'mmm' sound. Hee. (3) (Not Pictured) Surprisingly, after watching all those VD kisses I actually feel really good. Because a lot of the scenes where they were kissing featured Logan interrupting them or being on the scene - meaning we were meant to pick up on tension. A lot of them were all passionless, sweet kisses with zilch chemistry. Then you watch the scenes with all the LoVe kisses and it is soooo different. They can't stop touching each other, they're always giving each other repetitive little kisses if the other won't engage them in full makeout sessions. I think I was actually more generous to VD in the kissing count because I counted some of the series of pecks as one long kiss for LoVe *sighs with happiness* I will never regret shipping this couple over VD now and I am disappointed with RT a little less because we totally won B xxx |

Jen, great catch! And Belinda, you rock for this amazing recap of kissing. I'm sure the V/D stuff was torture, but at least there was more LoVe kissing to enjoy. :-)
You know, this does give me a bit more hope. Of course we've all commented ad nauseum about the lack of chemistry between V/D and the overwhelming chemistry between LoVe, but it is nice to see, in black and white, how completely uneven the relationships were in terms of passion. I am hoping beyond hope that this was completely intentional, and indicative of RT and company's grand scheme. Long live LoVe! |

Yeah, since there were more love kisses technically the 'VD lots of work' was cancelled out and we started to move into the 'wow, I wish work was always like this' category.
The work was worth it because I feel so much less depressed about VD now. I couldn't believe how few kisses there were for eleven episodes of a relationship. Also, a fair amount of the kisses mentioned in my post were in flashbacks/dream sequences from the first season. If I cut those out and only included the real kisses from current season one/season two relationships, the numbers are very different. The VD total comes to only 24!!! I'm glad if it makes you guys feel as happy as I do about this revelation! B xxx |

Wow, Belinda! Thanks!
I have to say, I've been thinking since Donut Run that the VD kisses in that episode should count negative. Not because they were worse than the previous VD kisses, but because given the circumstances it should have been so much more (now, don't get me wrong, I'm glad they weren't, and not that surprised, but still). I mean, they supposedly love each other, and they're never going to see or even talk to each other again, and that was all they could muster? Pathetic. Just imagine if it was Logan and Veronica who were in love and never going to see each other again. I think it goes without saying that the difference would be night and day. |

Re: Strange Question, but ...

I totally agree holly96. I hate VD, can't stand the couple, and even I thought 'that's it?' when Veronica kissed Duncan in his hideaway. I actually WANTED her to kiss him passionately (one of my masochistic moments) because it would have made the episode make more sense to me. The fact that both of them seemed to be reading from a script rather than feeling anything at their sepparation was so utterly wrong. The whole relationship was wrong and it will be a stain on the rest of the season if Veronica never realises that, and Duncan just hangs over everything else that happens.

Wow, Belinda! Thank you for taking the time to put that analysis together, you did an incredible job. It does make a person feel good when you can see the real breakdown and compare the types of kisses.
Physical connection through kissing, is one of the things that has made a big impression on me with regard to the Logan and Veronica chemistry from the beginning. They have this intensity that jumps off the screen and glues your eye to them. They have this desire in their coupleness to be kissing, touching, connected and that makes you really "feel" them as a unit. I agree about VD. They generally seem like this is the lead up to their "intimate moments": dialogue, funny line or supposed to be funny line, prerequisite kiss and then some safe, old shoe comfortable affection. That is all fine and dandy, but it makes for a VERY boring ,TV show relationship (especially on a show the VMars). Kat

Sigh...I miss LoVe. I think it's funny how even though RT is so Anti-LoVe, he was so keen to give us so much of it! Good call on that, Jennifer and thanks PolarTruckin for verifying it. One question...Do you have any idea about the amount of Logan/Veronica time versus the Duncan/Veronica time? Like, was LoVe not only kissing more often, but for longer as well?

Re: Strange Question, but ...

I love this scientific study of kisses! What a great idea to count & compare the number & quality of those kisses. It does reinforce our belief in LoVe by comparing the two although we already knew that our boy knows how to kiss a girl. In Donut Run it seemed more like Veronica was kissing goodbye to a relative she wasn't particularly fond of.
I also laughed at the way you analysed the kisses Quote:Not only was this study very informative but it was also funny. Great Job!! |
