Chapter One
And the story of Chelsea Hartfords disappearance came to a devastating conclusion this afternoon when a body which washed up on a beach in San Diego was confirmed to be that of the missing girl. Chelsea, who has been missing for almost five months, had just turned seventeen a week before her disappearance. She would have been a senior at Neptune High this year. Friends and family describe her as kind and grounded. She was an excellent student who loved to swim, play tennis, serve as Pep Squad Captain, and participate in the regular productions at the Neptune Playhouse. Chelsea is survived by her parents, Charles and Diane Hartford, and by an older sister, Lindsay.
At the first mention of Chelseas name, Veronica shifts her attention from the black nail polish shes meticulously brushing over her toenails to the television screen across the small living room. Careful not to drip any of the inky liquid onto the couch cushion, she drops the brush back into the bottle before raising the volume on the television. She sits stunned as she listens to the reporters solemn declaration of Chelseas death, and she watches the accompanying footage of several men wearing blank expressions as they lug the long black body bag down a drizzly gray beach.
When the cocky sneer of Neptunes current Sheriff appears on the screen, Veronica lets out a soft groan of frustration and launches a throw pillow across the room. Shes startled when she hears a muffled cry and turns in surprise to see that shes managed to inadvertently peg her father with the object of her frustrations.
Hey! Is that any way to greet your dear old dad after a long day on the clock? Keith grins comically and tosses the pillow back at Veronica before opening his arms. Come on, whos your
I hate when you say that. Veronica cuts him off as she mutes the television. She brushes a chunky layer of blonde hair out of her eyes and offers a wry smile. And yes, that would be the proper way to greet your father when one of your classmates has just washed ashore. You know, the way dead people often do.
Tossing the throw pillow back onto the couch, Keith nudges their large pit bull out of the way before he sinks into an overstuffed armchair and frowns. They found Chelsea Hartford?
Veronica gives a solemn nod before raising a cynical eyebrow. Can you take a guess at who they wont find?
Ill probably only need one, Keith responds begrudgingly.
Veronica snorts skeptically. Youd better lock me up, Pop. Neptunes got a ladykiller on the loose and finding Chelseas killer would actually require Lamb to, you know, get up off his ass.
Keith is quiet for a moment and then reaches over to ruffle her short hair. Well, sweetie, if its any consolation, I dont think you really have anything to worry about. This guy went for a girl with money. He glances down at the floor where Backup has curled up at her feet. Plus, youve got a really vicious pit bull on your side. I think youre safe.
Veronica responds with a small smile, which quickly gives way to a look of genuine concern. Glancing back at the television, she sees Lambs lips moving on the screen, his features carefully schooled into something which vaguely resembles compassion. Of course, Veronica thinks, the fact that hes gnawing on a piece of chewing gum kind of detracts from the whole sympathetic officer image hes going for.
Its gonna be okay, kiddo, Keith dips his head in an effort to meet her eyes. Theyll find this guy.
Veronica shakes her head. Its justlook at him. Just basking in the feel of the media attention. Hes such a bast
Veronica, Keith scolds.
She eyes him skeptically, but manages to smother the biting comments stirring in her mind. Well, he is, she argues stubbornly.
They both turn their eyes back to the television screen where the footage of the body retrieval is being replayed.
You know, she was an okay person. I mean, she went missing right around the time when the whole thing with Lilly went down, so who knows how she would have reacted, but still... Veronica pauses and sighs tiredly before she continues, She was kind of a friend once. And no one deserves this.
Keith watches her closely and senses that her sadness goes even beyond the news of Chelseas death, but he doesnt press the issue. If theres anything hes learned since the incidents with Lilly and Lianne, its that Veronica will no longer be bullied or manipulated into talking about her feelings. Instead, shes taken to the festering method of copingthat is, a whole lot of denial and internalizing, which are usually followed by a climactic explosion or breakdown of some sort. All he can do is hope that hes there for that climax as well as for its aftermath.
Slinging an arm around his daughters slim shoulders, he pulls her into a protective embrace and presses a kiss into her hair, I know school hasnt exactly been easy since the whole Lilly incident. I know that youve been going through a really hard time, and Im sorry. Im sorry youre paying for my actions. He can feel her small form shaking against him and hears her muffled sniffles as she presses her face into his shirt.
After a moment, she raises her teary eyes and gives him a brave yet wobbly smile, Schools really not that bad. Its just a couple of people, really. Besides, no one can keep a Mars down.
And despite the fact that Keith knows shes putting up yet another brave front, he gives her wide grin and presses another kiss to her temple. You said it.

The morning after Chelseas body is found, Veronica seriously contemplates skipping school. Life at Neptune High has been nightmarish enough ever since the Lilly incident, but the news of Chelseas murder is sure to push their 09er viciousness off the charts. After a solid thirty minutes of burrowing into her nest of flannel and staring into the abyss of her bedrooms popcorn ceiling, she heaves a sigh and rolls out of bed in defeat. Her dad has been worried enough ever since her mother took off, so shes fairly certain that the last thing he needs is to find out that his honors student daughter has started ditching classes.
Shes become adept at taking quick showers ever since moving into a complex where hot water is most definitely a limited commodity. Still, she takes a moment to rest directly beneath the pelting spray and revels in the foggy steam that has filled the tiny room. She finishes rinsing her hair before the water goes icy, which she wants to see as a sign of good things to come. With one towel in her hair and another wrapped around her small frame, she finds herself staring into the dichotomy she calls a closet as she decides how she wants to dress for the day. Its as if her closet is telling the story of her life over the past year. A distinct line divides the pinks and yellows from the blacks and reds. Its a line that represents all of the many changes in her life: Lilly from loneliness, friendship from ostracism, two parents from one, and happiness from misery.
For the first time in months, she begins pawing through the clothes which hang on the left side of the closetthe ones that belonged to a girl she sometimes misses very much, and her fingers brush over the luxurious textures of items Lilly had deemed unsuitable for her own overt sexuality.
Pink cashmere? This is so you, Veronica Mars. And so not me.
She doesnt even realize shes closed her eyes until her fingers float across the scratchy wool of a pleated miniskirt. Although chainmail or a suit of armor would probably be the most appropriate choice for the day shes bound to have, she hasnt been able to locate such selections at the local mall, so scratchy wool will have to do. Smiling at her accidental selection, she pulls the red and black skirt from the hanger and tugs a pair of boots free of her shoe pile as she begins assembling her ensemble for the day.

After securing the thick laces on her chunky black boots, munching on a piece of burnt toast, and guzzling a glass of bitter orange juice, she calls a quick goodbye to her father and hurries out to her LeBaron.
Ive got a secret, Lilly sings as she works the sudsy sponge in a circular motion. She grins at Veronica, A good one.
Veronica smiles at the smug expression on her best friends face and is about to question Lilly further when she notices that her friend is now distracted by several good-looking boys. Veronica giggles when Lilly wiggles her hips in a suggestive manner and winks playfully at the whistling group, but quickly sobers when Chelsea, the Pep Squad Captain, prods them to work faster.
Rolling her eyes at Chelseas demand, Lilly mouths a Later! before tossing her hair and bouncing over to her new admirers.
Grinning at Lillys flair for the dramatic, Veronica lifts the back of her palm to her sweaty forehead and takes a breath just as a shadow falls over her.
Come on, Veronica! Lets keep it moving! Weve got cars to wash! Chelsea grins enthusiastically before moving to the next group where she starts clapping encouragingly.
Veronica shakes her head at Chelseas overabundance of enthusiasm. Lilly once said that she suffered from too much pep, but if there was ever anyone who could make that claim, it was certainly Chelsea Hartford.

So whats your big secret?
Its been a long, hot, exhausting afternoon, but after a successful fundraiser, Veronica is resting comfortably in the passenger seat of Lillys Mercedes wanting desperately to know what Lilly had been so anxious to tell her.
Braking for a red light, Lilly eyes Veronica through oversized sunglasses. Its a big one, Veronica Mars. Im not sure you can handle it.
Veronica rolls her eyes. Lilly, you know youre dying to tell me. Out with it! Come on!
Lilly is silent for a moment before nodding, Okay, but you cant tell anyone. Not a soul, Veronica Mars. And that includes your parents.
Veronica considers for a moment, but she nods and draws an x over her chest. Cross my heart.
Lilly grins proudly. Guess whos seeing an older man?
Lilly! Veronica gasps. You cant be serious.
Lilly frowns and gives a nonchalant shrug. Of course Im serious. Why would I lie about something like that?
Who is it? Veronica questions quietly.
Now that I cant tell you, Lilly laughs. Keeping it a secret is part of what makes the sex so good. Lilly pauses. Well, that and the fact that hes more than twice my age. My parents would absolutely die if they knew, she grins.
More than twice your age? Veronica wrinkles her nose. Lilly, thats justgross.
Lilly turns on Veronica, her raised eyebrows daring Veronica to challenge her. Yeah, well not all of us can be satisfied by an eternity of hugs and kisses with guys like Duncan, Veronica.
Hey, watch it! Veronica protests. Besides, its not like Duncan and I are doing much of anything anymore. Crossing her arms over her chest, Veronica fixes her eyes on the blur of scenery just beyond the window.
Look, Veronica. Ive just come to the realization that high school guys can no longer satisfy me. You and Duncan are a perfect example of whats wrong with high school relationships. Ive moved onto bigger fish. She smiles wickedly, Much bigger fish, if you know what I mean. Maybe you should move on, too.
Blushing furiously, Veronica glances out the window to watch as her house comes into view. A typical Southern California development, Neptune Garden Estates is an ungated neighborhood thats located at the very bottom of the Balboa Hills and boasts three different floor plans with six different color schemes. Although the Mars house is an attractive two-story beige stucco with terracotta tiling and a pool with a diving board, it cant even compare with the sprawling estates scattered up into the hillsthe Kane mansion included. Still, its a home that her parents have worked hard for. And its a home that sits just within the 90909 zip code.
Slipping out of the SUV, Veronica slings her small pink backpack over her shoulder and waves to Lilly, Thanks for the ride, Lil.
Forget about Duncan. Youre better off without him. And remember, Veronica Mars, keep this between us! Lilly chirps before gunning the engine and barreling up the sloping street.
Itll be our little secret, Veronica murmurs as she makes her way up the sidewalk.
Hey, Veronica!
The hallway of Neptune High is bustling and Veronica is quickly pulled from her daydream when she hears her name, but she instantly wishes she hadnt heard it at all. Her face quickly hardens into a stony expression of rebellion and she starts walking down the hallway so she can make a stop at her locker.
Just because you ignore us doesnt mean were going to go away, the voice taunts. If that really worked, we would have ignored you away a long time ago.
Taking a deep breath, Veronicas jaw tightens as she glances at the group of 09ers. Still, she continues walking until she reaches her locker and begins spinning the knob. Hoping that the group will start on a new topicor even a new victimVeronica starts loading books into her bag. But she freezes when she hears the distinctive sound of expensive heels tapping against the floor just behind her.
Did you hear about Chelsea?
Veronica freezes with her back turned.
Dont let that little bitch ignore you like that! A male voice echoes through the hallway.
Dick Casablancas. Joy.
Taking a breath, Veronica closes her locker door and turns to face the visitor. She nods solemnly. Yeah, I heard. Its really awful.
Lilly looks Veronica up and down before curling her lip in disgust. Glancing back at the group of gaping 09ers for a moment, she gives Veronica a cold smile. Well, Veronica Mars, I just thought you should know. We wish it had been you.
Clenching her jaw in fury, Veronica looks Lilly straight in the eye before pushing right by her to head to her first class. She sees Duncan averting his eyes as she walks by his locker and sends a glare in his general direction, but she cant stop the barrage of memories that are unleashed when she sees his face.
A sudden spray of water splatters across the two lounge chairs, dotting the fabric of her swimsuit and leaving droplets on her sunglasses. Dropping her sunglasses, Veronica immediately grabs her camera and begins snapping humorous photos of Lilly as she tries to dry herself off.
God, Duncan! Are you five? Lilly complains grouchily as she removes her sunglasses and dries the lenses. Upon spotting Veronicas camera aimed in her direction, she groans. Cant you leave that thing at home for once?
Nope, Veronica chirps cheerfully as places the camera back in its case.
Lilly rolls her eyes. Im telling you, Ill never understand what you see in my dweeby brother.
Shrugging, Veronica turns her attention to the pool and smiles shyly when she sees Duncan treading water, a large grin spreading across his face when their eyes meet.
He has his perks, she replies with a small smile.
Whatever, Lilly mutters. Im turning over. I need some sun on my back if Im going to wear that halter this weekend.
Veronica nods absently before getting up and approaching the edge of the pool. With a mischievous half-smile, she takes a giant leap and pulls her legs up towards her chest, sending the a huge arc of water in Lillys direction.
Veronica! Lilly screeches.
Veronica looks back to where Lilly was lounging and giggles when she sees her best friend wringing the water from the ends of her golden hair.
You guys are so immature sometimes! she huffs before grabbing her magazine and stalking back towards the house.
Veronica giggles slightly before turning to face Duncan. Apparently were immature.
Duncan just smiles as he wraps an arm around her waist and pulls her into his arms. Veronica sighs contentedly as she wraps her arms around his neck and they bob lazily in the deep end of the pool.

Glancing down the hallway, she catches a glimpse of Duncan heading in her direction. With a cheerful smile, she slams her locker shut and turns to properly greet her boyfriend, anticipating his usual hug, kiss, and adoring smile. Shes not, however, prepared for the look of indifference he tosses her way. Her eyes narrowing in confusion, she watches as he adjusts his backpack on his shoulder and continues walking without so much as another look in her direction.
Convinced that his behavior is some kind of prank hatched with Lilly, she remains rooted to the same spot as she waits for him to crackto turn and come rushing back to kiss her, tell her good morning, and say that it was just a joke and it was all Lillys idea. As she watches him disappear around the corner, her smile continues to droop until its wiped completely from her face. With a glance in the other direction, she sees Lilly moving airily down the hall and immediately pounces on her, grabbing her by the arm and yanking her into a corner.
Ouch! Jeez, Veronica!
Whats wrong with Duncan? Did I do something wrong? Why is he ignoring me? The questions tumble from her mouth in rapid succession and Lilly looks taken aback for a long moment. Veronica watches her reaction closely and is dismayed to see Lillys carefree aura wilt as her expression quickly sobers.
Look, Veronica, I dont know whats going on. I just know that hes been dealing with a lot of stuff and hes been acting really strange lately. Maybe you should just give it some time, Lilly offers weakly before giving Veronica a hopeful smile.
But what did I do? Veronica whispers tearfully.
As she walks by the growing group of 09er bystanders, she can hear the giggles and the murmurs of Doesnt she know how lucky she was? How could anyone betray Lilly Kane? Oh my God! Does she shop at Whores R Us? Look at that skirt! And those dyke boots!
As she rounds the corner, she thinks she never guessed she would have to get used to hearing the words fucking bitch on a daily basis.

If theres one thing that makes Tuesdays worse than any other day, its the cafeterias pathetic attempt at Salisbury steak. After scouting a secluded table for her lunchtime ritual of ignoring every other student at Neptune High, Veronica pushes her lunch tray aside and pulls out her math book to begin looking over the assigned problem set.
Shes in the process of graphing an equation when a shrill cry erupts from across the quad. Glancing towards the commotion, she rolls her eyes when she sees that Lilly has been tossed over Sean Friedrichs shoulder and is squealing for him to put her down.
Lilly in the center of attention. Who would have thought? she mumbles to herself grouchily.
So I take it we dont like Lilly. Whoever that is.
Veronicas head snaps up at the sound of a strange voice and shes dismayed when she comes face to face with an African-American kid she hasnt seen before.
Uh, can I help you? she questions suspiciously.
You can help me by telling me who Lilly is and why we dont like her, he responds with a friendly smile.
Veronica watches with a frown as he pulls a juice box from his lunch bag. Who are you?
He extends a hand over the table. Wallace Fennel. Im new here.
She eyes his hand before tentatively grasping it in a handshake. Nice to meet you, Wallace. Now why are you sitting here? Havent you heard? Im, like, contagious or something.
Realization flickers in Wallaces dark eyes. Oh! You must be VictoriaVanessa
Veronica, she supplies.
Veronica, yeah! Veronica Mars. He nods. Ive heard about you.
And youre still here? she cracks.
Well, apparently being the new guy falls lands me somewhere in the vicinity of being Veronica Mars when it comes to the Neptune High totem pole.
So you thought wed bond over our mutual misfortune? Veronica asks in amusement.
That, and I thought we could organize a massive revolt. You know, a misfits take over the world kind of thing. What do you say? he proposes.
She narrows her eyes. I say youre odd.
You wouldnt be the first, he smiles.
So, Wallace, she drawls. Whats the deal? Are you looking for a friend? Because I have to warn you, friendship hasnt really worked out for me in the past.
Enter the much hated Lilly, he surmises.
She pans the quad once more and catches a glimpse of Lilly munching on veggies with the rest of the 09er girls. Right, she nods. Lilly.
Veronica clutches the crumpled note Lilly had handed her the day before in the hallway and lets her eyes flit over Lillys bubbly scrawl:
V-
Sorry I cant hang out with you after school today, but I got a text from my older man and I could use a little fun between the sheets.
-L
Veronica shakes her head as she pictures Lilly writing such an incriminating note with her favorite pink fuzzy pen, probably right in the middle of class. Cramming the note into her pocket, she dials the Kanes familiar number.
Yes?
Its a shock when Celeste Kane actually answers her own phone, her voice cool and clipped as though the act of answering is below her, but Veronica quickly recovers.
Hi, Mrs. Kane. Is Lilly there? she asks politely. She has the phone wedged between her ear and her shoulder, and her nimble fingers start to weave her hair into two thick plaits.
Oh, Celeste Kanes voice immediately turns icy. Hello, Veronica. Im sorry, but Lilly is unavailable. Shes babysitting this afternoon.
Babysitting?
Frowning in confusion, Veronica thanks Celeste before hanging up. Lilly hadnt mentioned anything about babysitting for the afternoon. Trying furiously to remember if Lilly had mentioned any clandestine plans for the afternoon, Veronica suddenly remembers her best friends older man. Heaving a sigh, she realizes that she probably wont be seeing Lilly for the rest of the day, and instead grabs a pair of sunglasses and a magazine so she can go out and enjoy the sunshine.
Its no more than an hour later and Veronica is lounging lazily in her backyard wearing a modest bikini and flipping through a magazine. With her iPod turned on full-blast, shes so busy humming and tapping her toes to the music that she doesnt notice Lilly approaching. The poke of Lillys dark red fingernail jerks her attention from her magazine and with a happy squeal, she jumps to her feet to properly greet her friend. After pulling back from their ritual hug, Veronica gets a closer look at her best friends face.
Lilly! Veronica cries out in horror. Lifting a hand to Lillys pale cheek, Veronica brushes her fingertips across the deep blues and purples which now mottle the smooth skin that surrounds her left eye. What happened? Are you okay?
Shrugging nonchalantly, Lilly tosses her hair and gives Veronica a dazzling smile, Of course, dorkus! Babysitting can be a dangerous job, you know.
Stepping back, Veronica eyes her friend suspiciously and then shakes her head, Nice try, Lil. You know I love you, but we both know that youre about the last person anyone would ever hire to babysit their children.
Veronica! You wound me.
Veronica raises her eyebrows skeptically.
What? Seriously, its no big deal. Lilly bounces on the balls of her feet, Besides, I just came over to see if youre still up for the beach tomorrow.
Veronica shakes her head and refuses to let Lilly change the subject, Lilly, did he do this? Did he hurt you?
Who? What are you talking about, Veronica?
This new guy, thisolder man, Veronica sputters.
Lilly lifts her eyebrows in surprise, Wow, Veronica! Youve got quite the active imagination. Did you get too much sun this afternoon? With a playful smile, Lilly reaches out to press her hand against Veronicas forehead. Well, no fever. Thats a good sign.
Veronica stares solemnly as Lilly laughs at her own joke and then tries again, Lilly, he hit you. You dont put up with that. You wont put up with that.
All amusement quickly drains from Lillys face, leaving an icy expression which reminds Veronica of Celeste. Listen, Veronica. My life is my business. I know that youre Daddys little princess and Mommys little angel and all, but youre really not one to be giving me relationship advice. I know what Im doing. I can handle it. So just leave it alone, okay? She eyes Veronica imploringly and smiles happily when Veronica nods in agreement.
Okay, Lil. Im sorry.
Lilly waves a hand through the air, Dont be sorry, Veronica Mars. Just make sure that this remains our little secret. Pinky swear?
Veronica hesitates for a moment before hooking her pinky with Lillys. Pinky swear, she nods.
Veronica?
Straightening suddenly, Veronica turns with narrow eyes on the latest person who has decided to disturb her carefully manufactured sense of peace. Shes more than a little surprised to see Emily Sanbourne, a former fellow member of Pep Squad, standing at her table. The petite brunette looks incredibly uncomfortable as she shifts her weight from one foot to another and fixes her gaze on anything but Veronicas face.
Are you lost, Emily? Veronica inquires. Or do you just really suck at insulting me?
Veronica watches as Emily wrings her hands anxiously and seems to think hard before taking a decisive step forward to sit down at the table. Wallace looks on curiously.
Look, Veronica
What do you want, Emily? Veronica prods dryly.
Emily sighs and drops her fist against the table in frustration, You know, you really can be a bitch!
And Ive heard that before. If thats what you came here to tell me, Im sorry to inform you that youll have to take a number. You should get your turn sometime next year. Veronica waves toward the 09er table, Run along.
Look, I need your help.
Veronica perks up and smiles daintily. Oh! Well, in that caseno!
Its not for me, Veronica. Emilys eyes lower, Its for Chelsea.
Well, thats no fun, Veronica thinks. Insulting a dead girl is just tacky.
Whos Chelsea? Wallace asks innocently.
Veronica glances over at him and shakes her head before turning back to Emily. Look, what happened to Chelsea is really horrible. I know you guys were co-captains for Pep Squad this year.
I want you to figure out who did this to her.
What?
What?
Come on, Veronica. You know as well as I do that Sheriff Lamb isnt going to find out who did this. And since your dad is doing the whole private investigation thing
Which hes doing because your families ran him out of office, Veronica states pointedly.
Look, Veronica, we were all talking and we think we know who might have done it. I mean, we dont have any evidence or anything, but we know that Chelsea was involved with this guy. Hes from LA and hes got a reputation for being kind of a lowlife. Lots of drinking and drugs and sex with randoms, you know? So she hooked up with him and he, like, wouldnt back off. He started calling her and showing up at her house. He even showed up while she was babysitting once.
And who is this guy?
Hes our age. His parents are both actors, so he pretty much does whatever he wants whenever he wants with whoever he wants.
How nice for him, Veronica deadpans. But I need a name.
Lifting her chin, Emilys dark eyes meet Veronicas lighter ones for the first time during the conversation. She gives Veronica a wry smile before replying, His name is Logan Echolls.
