CHAPTER 2

A month earlier

Okay, so Ill see you in about twenty minutes, I need to get something from the convenience store, Veronica said as she locked her car, her cell phone pressed to ear.

What? Wallace asked curiously from the other end of the line.

She smirked. Wallace, do you really want to know?

Hell, no, he answered instantly and she could almost see the scared expression on his face.

Thought so, she laughed. Of course, she wasnt going to tell him she was just getting dog shampoo for Backup. It would ruin all the fun. So Ill see you later and remember, if the popcorns not done by the time I get there, Im going to tell you everything about the bird and bees.

Ill make it now, Wallace promised as he practically slammed down the phone.

She laughed as she pocketed the phone and entered the shop. She smiled at the pretty, middle-aged woman behind the counter, who cheerfully waved back.

She was walking by a stack of toilet papers when she spotted a tall, familiar figure standing by the medicine rack. She instantly recognized the highlighted brown hair and grimaced. Wonderful. Just wonderful. She was so looking forward to having to listen him brag about his best friends victory in the school presidential campaign and point out how stupid shed been for siding with a narc. Maybe he wont see me, she mused hopefully.

Unfortunately, luck simply wasnt on her side today. He turned and she swore silently as his dark gaze met hers. His eyes widened and for a moment, she swore she saw a glint of fear in them before he quickly stared back at her with the condescending dislike that she had become accustomed to for almost a year.

Okay, Veronica, just do what you usually do. Annoy him with all you have. Hello, Logan, she said coolly. Are we slumming today? she asked sarcastically, indicating the store, which was rather out of his 09er range.

Shove it, Mars, he snapped as he returned his attention to the rows of plastic white bottles. She immediately frowned. Something was wrong. The Logan Echolls she knew and hate would have made a much hurtful comeback.

She studied him, noticing how pale he was beneath his tan. His eyes had held an almost dazed expression and his fingers shook as he reached for a bottle of painkillers. He lowered his head to read the prescription and that was when she noticed it.

The blood.

Concerned, she took an automatic step forward. Logan, are you okay? She reached out her hand.

He moved away so quickly he bumped into the shelf. Dont touch me! he shouted, but his voice cracked. Dont touch me.

Logan . . . She took another step forward. Let me

No, he cut her off. He tried to stand to his full height but a pained expression appeared on his face and he winced visibly. No . . .

His legs wobbled and he would have fallen flat on his face if Veronica hadnt caught him in time. She almost crumbled beneath his weight but she held fast, her hands on his arms, careful not to touch his back because of the blood on his nape. His arms snaked around her waist and his head dropped onto her shoulder.

Go away, he whispered against her hair. Go away.

Any other time, she would have taken him seriously but not today. She wondered if he knew how hard he was clutching her even as he told her to leave. She wondered if he knew how . . . sad he sounded, like a lost little boy. There was such a tinge of fear and desperation in his words and her heart constricted.

He was her enemy but a long time ago, he had been her friendone of her closest. Hed made her laugh so hard she wanted to pee in her pants. Hed made her blush furiously with his sexual comments, which hed loved making whenever she was close by, just to bask in her reaction. He had been the only one that dared to call her Ronnie even when she told him not to. He had made her heart stutter when he flashed her his famous Logan Echolls smile, even as she stood in his best friends arms. Yes, he was her arch nemesis now, but once, hed been her friend.

It was those memories that prompted her to wrap her arms tighter around him, to ignore the stare she received from the cashier as she guided him out of the store and to her car, to push away the surprise she felt when he obediently slid into the front passenger seat, to tangle her fingers with his as she drove one-handed all the way to her apartment.

CHAPTER 4

When Veronica was eleven years old and her father had been the sheriff, shed gone to his study room to look for some paperclips. He probably hadnt expected anyone to search through his desk because if he had, he wouldnt have left the pictures shed found in one of the drawers.

They were pictures from a case hed been working on at the time. A young girl had been admitted to the hospital because of a broken collar bone. Her mother had told the doctor that her daughter had accidentally fallen down the stairs. That would have explained the broken collar bone but not the other marks on her body. After treating her, the doctor had gone to his office and contacted the sheriffs department. Upon hearing his suspicions, a deputy had been dispatched to go to the girls home. To the deputys surprise, it was a single-story house. No stairs.

The pictures had been vivid, outlining years of terror captured on a girls body. There had been marks made from cigarette burns, scars from broken bones. But it had been the girls back that told most of the story. White, faded lines crisscrossing the small of her back, several angry red welts over them, fresh from her stepfathers belt.

The bastard had been arrested, of course, but he had certainly left his mark on the girl, in more ways than one. And he had also unknowingly left his mark on Veronica, who had been horrified that such evil existed. After finding the pictures, she had nightmares for weeks.

That had been six years ago. She had stored the memory away to the back of her mind and had never told anyoneespecially her fatherabout the pictures.

But now, looking at the Logans back, the memory flooded her mind and she was suddenly eleven years old again, helpless to feel anything but disgustnot for Logan, but for the bastard who put those bloody marks on his back.

Unthinkingly, she reached out to touch them and a rush of guilt filled her when he noticeably flinched. He still hadnt spoken but from the tense way he was holding himself, she knew he was waiting for her react badlyeither scream in revulsion or tell him to leave.

She wasnt about to do either.

He started when she stroked his nape soothingly but he didnt move away. In fact, he even arched his neck, silently telling her that he welcomed her touch. She continued to gently massage his nape and the rounded muscles of his shoulders, careful not to touch the red lashes and cause him further pain.

Logan, she said softly. Im going to wet a towel and wash away the blood, okay?

It took him a moment, but he finally gave her an imperceptible nod.

She went over to the sick and returned a second later with a damp hand towel in her hand. He winced as she pressed the towel to his back and she bit her lip, wishing she could take away his pain. As she cleaned the blood away, she saw the faded lines beneath the fresh ones and knew that this wasnt the first time. She saw other signs of abuse as well; small dark circles that could only be caused by cigarettes and tiny white scars.

It all made sense now, she mused as she blotted his back with a dry towel, her touch as light as she could make it. The way he would wear long sleeved clothes even when the weather was scorching hot, the way he would keep on his T-shirt when they used to hang out by the pool, his insistence to play video games instead of go swimming and how when he did enter the pool, hed made sure his back was to the wall. Veronica recalled the times shed seen him flinched when Duncan or Dick slapped his back in greeting or how hed sometimes show up at school with a faint limp. God, all those times and they all made perfect sense now.

She set the towel aside and withdrew a bottle of disinfectant from the first-aid kit. Pouring some onto a cotton swab, she said, Logan, Im going to use disinfectant now, okay?

Even with her warning, he couldnt prevent the sharp cry that jerked from his throat as she wiped his back.

Im sorry, she whispered raggedly, tears stinging her eyes. Im sorry.

His shoulders shook but he remained where he was, taking deep, even breaths as she continued to make sure the lashes wouldnt be infected. After a minute, he was even able to slightly relax. Nevertheless, she was startled when he spoke.

I knew Duncan was going to win the election.

Veronica licked her dry lips. I did, too. I voted for him.

Why? I thought you were that Varners chick campaign manager or something. His voice was calm, as if he were speaking about the weather and she understood what he was trying to do.

I wasnt her campaign manager, she said as she swabbed a particular angry-looking line, biting her bottom lip when he winced. And I decided not to vote for her once I discovered she was spying for Sheriff Lamb.

So the narc rumors were true. Huh.

Veronica didnt reply as she finished treating his wounds. Done. You should probably wait a while before you put your shirt back on. She threw away the cotton swabs into the trash can and washed her hands. She wasnt surprised when she saw that they were trembling.

He nodded and climbed to his feet. He was still rather pale and a sheen of sweat covered his forehead, but the blankness had disappeared from his eyes.

Are you hungry?

CHAPTER 6

Eventually they left the bathroom. Veronica stood in the kitchen, drinking a glass of water to re-dehydrate herself, while Logan spoke on the phone and ordered their food. When he was done, he slipped the phone back into his pocket and turned to study her.

He didnt know what to say to her. He had been shocked to find her in the convenience store and too stung from the recent meeting with his fathers belt to summon up the insulting remarks that usually appeared naturally whenever she was around. And when shed taken his hand and guided him to her car, hed been too grateful to do anything but hang on.

Most people believed that their small group had broken apart after Lilly was murdered, but they were wrong. Their foursome had ended the moment Duncan dumped Veronica. She might not have realized it, but she had always been the glue holding them together. She had been the innocence to Lillys outrageousness, the sweetness that Duncan had needed and the genuine kindness Logan hadnt known existed but had been completely enticed by. Lillys death had changed them, but it hadnt been the reason why theyd drifted apart.

Logan knew that he had always been drawnfor lack of a better wordto Veronica Mars. It didnt matter whether they were friends or not but he had always instinctively sought her out. There was just something about her, a glow that could both attract and irritate him at the same and like a moth, he was helpless to resist her flame.

Shes ruined everything, he thought grimly. Before today, hed known where he stood with heron her most hated list and the feeling had been mutual. But she had totally destroyed that belief the second she took his hand and brought him here. Shed seen him at his most vulnerable and instead of pushing him away, shed turned around and helped himshed cried for him, for fucks sake. The instant hed felt the hotness of her tears on his skin, he knew he would never be able to go back to hating her and in the back of his mind, he realized that hed never really hated her to begin with.

So what was he supposed to say to the girl who, with just a single action, had changed his entire belief system?

The food will be here in about thirty minutes.

She set the glass down and offered him a weak smile. Thanks. Her eyes were swollen and her cheeks were splotchy but Logan still thought she was one of the prettiest girls hed ever seen. Although hed never told anyone, he thought the new Veronica was hot, with her short hair and shorter skirts and calf-length boots. It was a vast improvement from the old Veronica, with her yellow cotton sundresses and fluffy hairdo.

He was thinking of something else to say to her when her big-ass pit bull appeared and started to lick his hand. He bent down to scratch the dogs head.

He likes you.

He looked up and smirked at her. You might find it hard to believe, but I can be a likeable guy from time to time.

Youre right. That is hard to believe, she said, smiling. But its weird because Backup used to try to bite Duncans hand off whenever he came by. I had to lock him up in the bedroom.

Who, Duncan or Backup?

Smart-ass.

The smartest.

She rolled his eyes at the pride in his voice.

So what do you wanna do until the food gets here?

A slow smile spread across her face. Theres a marathon I want to watch.

Logan raised an eyebrow and put his hands on his hips. Please dont say what I think youre gonna say.

Her smile widened.

Did anyone ever tell you that you have an unhealthy obsession with South Park? Logan asked as he watched Veronica almost fall onto the floor laughing. Her giggles were strangely comforting but he wasnt going to go thereat least, not right now.

She wiped the corners of her eyes and picked up her plate of fried rice again. How can you not find it funny?

Gee, Im sorry if I cant laugh when a ten-year-old boy makes his enemy eat his parents, he said sarcastically.

You just dont have a sense of humor.

Excuse you, she retorted. You just dont want to admit that Cartmans a genius.

Veronica snorted and slanted him a disbelief look. You call Weevil your pool boy.

Thats different. When she snorted again, he turned to look at her closely. Whats up with you and him, anyway?

Weevil? Were friends.

Youre not dating? The thought that they were twisted his guts. Only because I hate Weevil. It has nothing to do with her. Nothing at all.

She laughed. Weevil? she said again. Sorry to ruin your impression of me, but no, were not dating. Hes not my type and I dont think Im his either.

But you get along well together?

She frowned at him. Why was he asking these kinds of questions? Yes, I get along with him. Hes actually a very nice guy if you ignore the fact that hes the leader of a biker gang.

Now it was Logans turn to snort. Sorry, cant see it. Course, it might have something to do with the fact that he tried to break my nose. He paused and briefly touched her hand. By the way, sorry about your headlights.

Bygones. Sorry about the, uh, bong.

He smirked. Bygones. It was actually pretty funny. If I hadnt been the victim, Id commend you on a very creative prank.

She grinned. Thanks. Corny helped me make it.

He grew still and then slanted her an intense look. Is that what we are? Friends?

She stared down at her plate. We used to be.

He felt a pang of regret. Yes, they used to be friends until he woke up one day and decided it would be easier to blame her than blame himself. So what are we doing now?

Eating Chinese food and watching one of the greatest shows in the history of television? Veronica gave a short, sharp laugh. I dont know, Logan. What would you call it?

He scratched his hair as he considered the question. Were hanging out?

She finally turned to look at him and smiled softly. Yeah, I guess you can say that. Were hanging out.

Logan halted with his hand on the doorknob. He whirled around to face her, his eyes wide. What did you say?

She twisted her fingers nervously. Stay here tonight, she uttered in a rush. Look, this isnt a come-on and no matter what you think, I dont usually ask guys to sleep

What about your dad? he interrupted, his gaze intent on her face.

Hes out of town. Logan . . . I know we havent exactly been friends but I just . . . dont go home tonight, okay? If you dont want to stay here, then call Duncan or Dick and crash at their place. Just dont . . . not yet, okay?

Logan stared at her for a long time. His mind was a whirlwind of confusion but one thing was perfectly clear: he didnt want to leave. He didnt want to leave her.

His hand fell from the knob.

Veronica started as Logans hand closed around her wrist. Shed thought he was asleep. She looked down at him, lying on his belly in her bed. What? she whispered.

You dont have to sleep in your dads room. You can sleep here. With me. The words werent spoken but they both knew it was what he implied.

Her pulse began to beat rapidly beneath his fingers and she prayed he didnt notice. Logan, I dont think thats such a good

Earlier tonight, you asked me to stay with you and now Im asking the same thing, he said and in a voice that tugged on her heartstrings, he added, Please, Ronnie.

Veronica had thought shed gone past the point where she allowed her heart to override the warnings of her brain, but she guessed she was wrong. Scoot over.

She slipped into the bed, which was too small for two people, and drew the covers up to her chest. She was startled when he wrapped his arm around her waist and attempted to pull away.

His arm tightened. Dont . . . please.

She took a deep breath and forced herself to relax, ignoring how her heart was trying to burst out of her body. He sighed, relieved, when he felt her tensed muscles loosen and pressed his lips against one slim shoulder. Thank you.

She closed her eyes and covered the hand on her stomach. Tomorrow, they would probably return to being enemies, to pretending as if nothing had changed between them, but tonighttonight was theirs and theirs alone, without the presence of the rest of the world to interfere. And as Veronica allowed herself to be lulled by the steady rise and fall of his chest, she acknowledged to herself that she needed his comfort as much as he did hers.

CHAPTER 8

He fell off the bed.

Right after she practically burst his eardrums with her shriek, he stumbled off the mattress and then swore painfully as his back hit the floor hard.

Veronica, now fully alert, sat up on the bed, her eyes as round as an owls as her heart pounded swiftly against her ribcage. Omigod, omigod, omigod, omigod. She shoved her fingers in her hair as she stared down at Logan, completely stunned. Omigod, omigod, omigod, omigod.

Veronica? Hey yo, Superfly! You awake yet?

Wallace! Through the whirlwind of shock in her mind, she registered his voice. What was heoh God. She had told him yesterday to come over in the morning so they could go to school together and in the emotional turmoil of learning Logans secret, she had totally forgotten about it.

V? Id come in but Im afraid Ill get mentally scarred for life.

His voice sounded too close for him to be standing outside the apartment, she realized. And then remembered shed told him where they hid the spare key in case she was slow to answer the door. Note to self: find another place to hide the keyright before you shoot yourself.

Veronica? You awake or not? She heard the impatience lacing his words.

She cleared her throat. J-just a minute, Wallace, she stammered. I-I just woke up.

Okay then. Ill just dig through the fridge.

O-Okay.

She waited until she was sure he was out of earshot before turning her attention to the boy sprawled on the floor. His cheeks were slightly flushed and he was breathing hard and she tried to ignore the bulge that was apparent in the front of his pants.

T-thats Wallace, she whispered. Were supposed to go to school together. You have to go.

He sat up on his elbows and slanted her a disbelief stare. What?

She took a deep, shuddering breath and ran her hands through her disheveled hair. Please, you have to leave. J-just go.

Twin spots of anger colored his cheekbones as he scrambled to his feet. Youve got to be fucking kidding me, he snapped.

Keep your voice down, she begged, her blue-green eyes filled with panic. Logan, you need to go. He c-cant see you.

And what? You think Im going to magically turn invisible when I walk by him to the front door? Logan demanded harshly.

Her eyes darted around the room nervously. You can use the window, she blurted out. When she saw the vein throbbing in his forehead, she wrapped her arms around her waist and added, Please.

Ronnie. He took a step forward and reached out to touch her, but she cringed away.

Please, she choked. I cantI cant deal with this right now. Just go, Logan. Please. Leave.

She shut her eyes tightly and held herself protectively, wishing the ground would open up and swallow her whole. She couldnt look at him, couldnt look at the desire still darkening his eyes.

She flinched when he swore viciously. And then she heard a soft creaking sound and slowly reopened her eyes.

He was gone.

It wasnt until she was in the shower that she finally surrendered and allowed the tears to fall from her eyes, mingling with the water cascading on her head.

She didnt know why she was crying. It wasnt like hed hurt herfar from it. But what hed donethe pleasure hed given herhad taken something away from her, had ripped off the protective band-aid shed placed over the hole in her heart and left it vulnerable. And it was this that chilled her to her very bones. Shed sworn to herself that she would never allow anyone to make her feel defenseless ever again and Logan Echolls had managed to cause her to break that vow by pleasuring her. Hed spent almost an entire year insulting her, cutting the air from her tires, breaking her headlights and overall making damn sure her high school life became as miserable as possible. Yet none of those actionsnot calling her a whore, not vandalizing her carhad succeeded in breaking her walls down and it hurt her now to learn that all hed needed to do was touch her.

She turned the shower off and stepped out of the stall, ignoring the traces of desire still present in her body. Wrapping a towel around herself, she walked over to the sink and peered into the mirror. Thats pretty, she said sarcastically as she took in her swollen eyes and pale skin. Shed cried more in the last twenty-four hours than shed had this entire year. Over a boy, too. Maybe I should write to Cosmo.

There was several light taps on the door, followed by, Hey, V, if youre not ready in ten minutes, were gonna be late.

She unlocked the door. Just let me dry my hair and put on my clothes and then well go, she told Wallace.

He frowned as he looked at her. You okay there, V? You dont look so hot.

No kidding. She offered him a tight smile. Im okay. Just had a rough night.

You never told me what came up.

She avoided looking at his eyes. It was just one of the cases Im working for my dad. I had a little hiccup but its all over now. Hopefully. Im gonna put on my clothes now.

Wallace briefly put his hand on her arm. You know you can tell me anything, right? Ill help anyway I can.

Can you help me by telling me what the hell Im doing having almost-sex with the guy that has made me into the number one public ridicule?. Veronica sighed and patted her friends shoulder. I know, Wallace, I know.

CHAPTER 10

Is there a reason why youre wearing a pair of sunglasses and a hat in school? Wallace asked as he and Veronica walked down the hallway to her locker.

I was spotted having dinner with Brad Pitt two nights ago and the paparazzi has been following me ever since, she answered mock-seriously.

He snorted. Girl, you seriously need help.

Why, thank you, Mr. Fennel, thats a nice shirt youre wearing, too.

Wallace shook his head. He glanced at his wristwatch and then back at her. Hey, listen, I need to go see my basketball coach.

She froze and turned to look at him, wide-eyed. Youre leaving me?

He gave her a puzzled look. Yeah, but dont worry, Ill come back to visit the kids, he joked.

She wasnt in the mood to laugh. Cant you see your coach later?

Not if I want to catch him alone. Wallace frowned. V, whats wrong?

Nothing, she answered quickly. She gave a short, nervous laugh. I just wanted a little company, thats all.

Look, I guess I can

No, its okay, she interrupted. Go see your coach. Ill just go grab my books and head to class.

You sure? Cause I can

She cut him off again. Yes, Im sure. She smiled. I was just having a girly moment, I guess. You know hormones and all; its near my period cycle.

Hey, hey, hey! Wallace instantly exclaimed, taking a step back, a disgusted expression on his face. Now why do you gotta go and scare a brotha like that?

She laughed. Ill see you at lunch.

Veronica waited until he disappeared out of sight before turning around and making her way to her locker. She was careful to keep to the sides, walking behind people who were larger than herwhich were thankfully a lotand hoping against hope no one would pay her any attention, especially a certain frost-tipped, dark-haired boy.

She wasnt ready to see himwasnt sure if she ever would. What was she going to say to him? What was he going to say to her? Or would he just pretend as if nothing had happened? She was shooting for that one.

Oh, God, what if hed told someone? Whos he gonna tell, Veronica? Duncan? Logan could be stupid at times but he wasnt that stupid. Telling your best friend that you fooled around with his ex-girlfriend wasnt a wise thing to do. Dick? That was probably her best bet but Dick couldnt keep his mouth shut to save his life. If Logan told Dick, news that Logan Echolls and Veronica Mars hooked up will be all over school by third period and she didnt think he wanted the entire student body to know that hed been kicked out of her apartment. Unless, of course, he twisted the story and said that he kicked her out.

God, will you listen to yourself, Veronica Mars? Youre probably obsessing over nothing. Hell most likely go back to treating you like dirt and youll go back to treating him like something you scraped off the bottom of your shoe. Veronica gave a self-satisfied nod. Yup. That was the most likely possibility. Everything would go back to the way they wereat least, the way they were before yesterdayand she shouldnt stressed herself out thinking about it.

She hitched her messenger bag higher on her shoulder. Nothing happened. And if she were lucky, nothing would. Look on the upside, hes probably not coming today. And if he is, hes probably not here yet. You have nothing to worry about. Nothing at all.

Veronica was wrong on several accounts but the major ones were: Logan did come to school, he was already there and she had a lot to be worried about, because no matter what, he was determined to talk to her.

So I was like, dude, thats a lemon and he was like, naw dude, thats a lime and I was like, tow-ma-toes, tow-may-toes.

Logan pinched the bridge of his nose between his eyes. Those drugs and booze were finally taking their toll on Dick. He leaned back against the locker next to the blondes, his eyes intently searching the hallway for another, but much more desirable blonde.

Dick punched his upper arm. Isnt that, like, funny? he laughed.

Logan laughed shortly and nodded his head. Hysterical, he replied, although he had no idea what the hell Dick was talking about. Listen, Dick He broke off as he finally saw her. A slow grin appeared on his face as he took in her appearance. Hell, had she honestly thought a hat and a pair of sunglasses would make her unrecognizable? Maybe to most people, but not to him. He could spot her in a New York rush hour.

And apparently, Dick could, too, because before Logan had a chance to speak, the blond smirked and drawled, Hey, Mars, whats with the getup? You finally found your calling as a bag lady?

Her shoulders visibly stiffened but she didnt say anything. She didnt look at them and she kept on walking. She did however flicked her middle finger at Dick and Logan couldnt help smiling.

Irritated by her lack of response, Dick slammed his locker shut and folded his arms across his chest. Nothing to say? Hey, its cool. Guess you dont want to deal, huh?

That stopped her dead in her tracks and Logan almost choked. She slowly turned to face them and darted him a glance. He faintly shook his head to her silent question. He hadnt told anyone and Dicks comment was just a remarkable coincidence.

She bit her bottom thoughtfully, as if debating whether or not she wanted to believe him and while Logan knew he didnt deserve it, her lack of trust in him hurt.

She sighed, as if resigned, and walked up to them, but she kept her eyes glued on Dick. Hey, thats right, Dick, I dont want to deal, she told him bitingly. I dont want to deal with your abnormally small brain right now, which, from what I hear in the girls locker room, happens to be just a lee-tle bit larger than your namesake. So why dont you make like the jackass you are and go annoy some other girl, alright?

Dick sputtered but before he could summon a good comeback, shed turned around and stormed away. The blond swore and punched his locker with his fist. Damn it, just once I wanna make that little slut cryand not my name, either.

Dont call her that, Logan said sharply.

Dick frowned. Dude, what the hell is wrong with you? Its Veronica Mars.

OMG, I'm soooo sorry for posting this chapter later than I'd said I would. Something came up and before I knew it, one thing led to another and I discovered I had a life outside of the Love Shack (yeah, I know, surprised the hell out of me, too ). Anyway, here's chapter fourteenth and thanks for waiting.


CHAPTER 14

He didnt need to be told twice.
