Just recently I bought this book and I think all VM fans would enjoy it. The book is composed of various essays, one written by TWP's Couch Baron. It's an awesome book and you'd be happy to know there is a chapter on LoVe. What I most enjoy is that there is a foreward by RT before each chapter. Many believe that during interviews, RT hangs himself, but on paper you'd come to a whole new level of respect for him. It's awesome reading his POV on each of the topics brought up in this book and I...

(I don't understand the whole hate for RT or CB thing so I was maybe able to enjoy this series even more without that distraction). But if you have this book the chapter by Misty Hook "Boom Goes The Dynamite" is excellent. I read it becase I really wanted to understand why I was in love with a fictional character named Logan Echolls. Misty Hook is a PHD who specializes in pop culture....

See, the Meisner vs. Strasberg analogy also doesn't work with RT's particular example, because Dustin Hoffman is very much a Strasberg method actor. In fact (I'm not 100% certain on that) I think he studied under Strasberg at The Actors Studio. He certainly stated many a time that he was a follower of Strasberg in his career. And you're right: if JD is a "method" at all , he is certainly a Meisner guy. The opposite of Hoffman.

Honestly, what irkes me so much about this casual thowing...

I guess with the Olivier/Hoffman analogy I'm looking at it the same way RT did and don't really see it as contradictory. Not as a direct comparison of specific acting styles (because true, the analogy may start to break apart if you get into all the details), but more as a lose analogy of how each approaches what they do. Jason may "act" in the sense that he doesn't rely on personal experience and rather becomes someone entirely different from himself, but that wasn't really the...

Holly, I'm sure you're right about the "method'y." But only because RT is so muddled in his own definition. As usual. LOL.

The fact is that he uses the story of Olivier vs. Hoffman which is specifically known in movie circles as the example of free-style vs. "method." So to speak. Method acting is particularly about relying on your past experiences and emotions to create the part, true. JD specifically stated in an interview that he doesn't do that.
I don't think RT meant that JD is method in the strict sense of the word (he actually uses the word "method-y"). He's just pointing out that JD very much becomes Logan, has to work himself up before scenes, etc., while KB easily turns it on and off before/after scenes. Basically, I think he meant that JD has his own method of inhabiting his character. And from everything I've read/heard, that's very much true. I can't find the book at any of the local bookstores, and I'm sure as hell not going to pay to just read the one forward. But I've been reading lots of different comments about his intro, and it sounds like a lot of people loved what he had to say about LoVe, but I don't know how seriously I can take that, as a lot of fans are willing to make loaves out of crumbs, and that's all I think RT ever gives. I think JD was pretty much an outsider period, but he did have some friendships (notably Francis Capra, Michael Muhney and Ryan Hansen). While he enjoyed working with Kristen tremendously, she, well, she didn't quite return the sentiment. And they weren't friends. Definitely not tight.
